Weight Training Equipment
Free weights training is a low tech, economical option
for strength training and muscle toning. It takes proper technique and
co-ordination to handle free weights properly. This makes for a more
challenging workout. Proper instruction is highly recommended as improper
technique can lead to injury. If you are using heavier barbells and
a bench routine, you will need a “spotter” so you don’t end up pinned!
If you don’t have a training partner, it is safer to use dumbbells.
One of the best ways to lose weight is to build calorie-burning
muscles. Free weights exercise routines add more variety. It is a good
idea to change the routines regularly.
Start with at least 4 or 5 pairs of dumbbells ranging
in weight from 2.5 to 45 pounds. Purchase them in 5 to 10 pound increments.
For a 20 pound barbell you will also need weight plates
- four of each of 10, 5 and 2.5 pound sizes – plus a bench.
A weight bench is essential for many strength training exercises.
Flat, incline, decline, & collapsible benches offer different solutions
for you training requirements.
Advanced weight training routines may require
specific equipment such as power racks or cages. If you are looking
to push your training to this level, a power rack or a power cage
should be considered as they offer an important safety mechanism.
If you accidentally drop the weights, these structures will prevent
the weights from dropping on you. These units are large and often
fairly expensive so you may want to shop a bit to find the make
and model that is the safest and strongest. Proper instruction and
application of the lifting techniques is critically important, even with
the safety backup these units provide.
If you have lots of space you may also wish to consider
specific weight machines with cables, pulleys and weight plates.
