Allergies are the least irritating, but at worst they can really affect your daily life. Respiratory allergies and digestive system are widespread, but also skin allergies are common. To manage a skin allergy, 1) you must understand the situation, 2) you have to find what triggers the reaction and 3) you must take care of your skin.
Allergies are caused by an extreme reaction of the immune system to certain substances – allergens and irritants. This causes the release of inflammation-producing chemicals that are responsible for allergy symptoms. There is much information available online, you should also consult your doctor and go to the library. Knowledge is power!
The second step is to identify substances that cause allergies and then to eliminate allergens and irritants. It is more difficult than it appears because there are over 3,000 known triggers for skin allergies, some of these natural substances (skin allergy caused some fruits are fairly frequent, for example) and some artificial. A fairly common example of this is latex – it begins as a natural product, the sap of rubber trees, but additional proteins are added during the manufacturing process. Latex gloves will of course provoke a reaction, if worn by someone allergic to the substance, but the latex is more widespread than many of us realize, being present in some models and underwear for example. Vinyl or plastic can be replaced by latex in most cases and this is the best way to deal with this particular allergy.
Nickel allergy is quite common, and seems to be increasing. Some sources say that the number of patients has increased by about 40% over the last ten years – we think this could be down to the fashion of piercing. Nickel is present in coins and jewelry, but can also be found in some cosmetics and scissors, zips and cabinets and doorknobs. Some products also contain nickel. Anyone who is allergic to nickel should try to avoid the metal – it can be difficult outside the home substance is so ubiquitous.
The third step in managing a skin allergy is to take care of your skin. An easy solution is to keep nails short and smooth, to minimize any damage caused by scratching. Moisturizer is important because it prevents skin dryness. Sometimes moisturizer alone is not enough and a corticosteroid cream (available by prescription only) will be necessary to relieve inflammation. Hot baths and showers should be avoided they dry out the skin, it is preferable to have a soak in a long warm bath to which baking soda or oatmeal was added (they are good soothing agents). Mild soap or neutral pH should be used and bubble baths should be avoided. After bathing, you must dry the skin gently, then apply moisturizer. Unfortunately, those who have skin allergies often need to avoid certain sports and the need to wash the skin carefully after bathing.
However, if the three steps are followed carefully, it is possible for people skin allergies to live a fairly normal life.
