Aristotle helped define the standards of fitness 2,500 years ago when he learned one thing that suits its purpose well is fit. Fortunately for us, the cardiovascular system, lungs, skeleton, muscles, endocrine system and all the other amazing components of body function for our purpose: to live well.
Exercising aids fitness in numerous ways, each with one or more of these systems.
Increased physical activity causes the heart to work harder than at rest. That rate increases, blood, tissues flooding with oxygen costs and removes cellular waste.
Exercise causes the lungs to take in extra oxygen to bathe the tissues and helps to keep the heart. Exhalation removes carbon dioxide, a breakdown product of certain biochemical reactions.
Regular, moderate exercise helps raise HDL (high density lipoprotein) cholesterol (the good kind). It helps to regulate levels of sugar in the blood and converts stored fat into sugars that are used to provide energy. This process also prevents obesity.
Other benefits of a program of regular physical conditioning are the most obvious and most often among the most direct targets Most of the people who make the effort: increased muscle mass, toned legs, buttocks, arms, stomach and healthier skin. On the way, the individual receives value added for greater strength, improved balance, a higher resistance and (often) a better state mind.
Different types of routines will emphasize one area over another. Aerobic routines help the cardiovascular and lung, weight lifting focuses on building muscle tone and mass, yoga and pilates helps balance, flexibility and muscular control. But each of them, and several others, contribute more than the group under discussion. The body is an integrated system and improving an area almost always has beneficial consequences for others.
All these advantages, at least a moderate degree, can be had for minimal daily effort. Intensity of activity "moderate" for 30 minutes a day, five days a week, will go a long way toward optimizing fitness.
A brisk walk, taking the stairs one or two flights, a short daily jog, jumping to rope and many other simple activities can be performed without special equipment or training.
More intense activity, well done, can raise that level even further. A vigorous tennis game, a swim in the pool, an hour on the treadmill or bike, or one of dozens of others, increase your fitness for a summit with only a moderate investment of time and money.
For the truly committed there are, of course, a thousand and one classes at the gym, and all kinds of fitness equipment at home to adapt to variety of budgets. A daily routine using free weights, followed by a good jog around the park that all systems are working well.
And, as Aristotle taught there all these centuries, to work well is to live well.
